Rhizosphere

How can designers use soil as a living resource to inform a new understanding of the relationship between agriculture and ecology?

Arles, France was once known as the transhumance capital of southern France. Building on this history, this proposal is centered on the ritual of movement with the changing seasons. A sequence of pastures will be linked together along a 122 kilometer route through the different unique landscapes that converge around Arles. The pastoral parade route will gradually improve the soil, creating a lifeline that the surrounding landscape can draw on as a shared commons.

The project was presented in the format of an epistolary, a series of letters that revealed an alternative future where we have a deeper connection to the soil.
